Vaccine against cervical cancer available 02/11/2006 00:00

New vaccine will help prevent cancer in women and save lives

2 November 2006

AMSTERDAM - Dutch women can let their daughters be preventively vaccinated against cervical cancer as from Thursday.

Also women up to 26 years of age can let themselves be vaccinated. The vaccine, with the name Gardasil, prevents the transfer of the human papilloma virus (HPV), which can cause tumours.

Each year approximately two hundred women die in the Netherlands from cervical cancer. The European Union approved the vaccine in September. The company which makes the vaccine, will later in the day present a study into among others what know women concerning the disease.
