The Netherlands focuses on freedom of religion 04/09/2007 00:00

4  September 2007

THE HAGUE (ANP) – The Netherlands will stress the importance of the freedom of religion and ideology at the sixth assembly of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva in September.

Due to the efforts of the Netherlands that holds the deputy chairmanship of the Human Rights Council, the issue has been put on the agenda and the European Union will submit a resolution that will reconfirm the freedom of religion.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Maxime Verhagen wrote this in a letter to parliament on Monday. This resolution also implies that every individual has the right to change his religion and is free to practice his religion or conviction jointly or alone without state intervention.

In addition to the assembly the Netherlands will organise a meeting in which the UN Special Rapporteur for the Freedom of Religion, Asma Jahangir, will take part.
