Soldiers will be kept in custody 01/06/2007 00:00

1 June 2007

ARNHEM – The court today decided to extend the pre-trial custody of five military personnel from the Oirschot barracks who are suspected of attempted manslaughter of a 28-year-old homeless man in Eindhoven.

The five soldiers will remain in detention for another two weeks, the court decided. The public prosecution department had asked that their detention be extended by 90 days.

Nine soldiers were involved in a scuffle with a homeless man on the Stationsplein in Eindhoven on 16 May. There are conflicting reports on how the fight started.

The homeless man was kept in hospital for observation for several days following the incident.

Four other soldiers who reportedly stood by as the incident took place have already been released but are suspended from duty pending possible prosecution by the justice department.
