Film-maker and columnist remembered two years after his assassination in Amsterdam
2 November 2006
AMSTERDAM - Today marks the day - two years ago - when Cineaste Theo van Gogh was shot dead in Amsterdam.
On November 2nd in 2004 the 47 year old scenario writer and columnist was shot while cycling during the peak hours in the morning in the Linnaeusstraat in Amsterdam-Oost by Mohammed B. (Bouyeri). B. then slit the throat of Van Gogh and skewered a letter onto the body. He received a lifelong prison sentence for the assassination.
This year no official commemoration meeting takes place on the spot where Van Gogh was assassinated.
Last year the municipality of Amsterdam organised a meeting where Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende and Mayor Job Cohen both spoke.
At the beginning of next year in the surrounding Oosterpark the sculpture 'The Scream' will be revealed in memory of the film maker. This unveiling is seen by the municipality as a commemoration.
The foundation Friends of Pim Fortuyn has organised a small commemoration in the afternoon. Around 14.00 the friends will meet on the spot of the assassination to lay flowers.
There will also be speakers present, according to the initiators.
The Amsterdam cinema Het Ketelhuis is holding a remembrance evening on Thursday.
The last film of the filmmaker, 06/05 concerning the assassination of
Pim Fortuyn, will be shown as well as a number of short films concerning the death of the film-maker.
