AMSTERDAM — Police displayed a reconstruction of the head of a murdered teenage girl to the public in a bid to identify her on Tuesday.
Various body parts of the 'Maas Girl' were found in bags along the Maas River in Rotterdam in recent months.
The first discovery took place on 20 June, when a leg was found, followed by a torso two days later. On 13 July, a head was found in a travel bag by passersby at the Maashaven.
DNA tests revealed the body parts belonged to the same person.
Police and public prosecution official now hope that showing the reconstruction of the girl's head will lead to her identification.
All that is known about the girl was that she was aged in her teens and she had black skin colour.
DNA tests have failed to identify her. Calls for witnesses have yielded nothing, nor have dental records: the girl never went to a dentist.
The head of the ports police, André Vervooren, said it is unclear how the girl died.
The body parts do not show external wounds and she was not sexually abused.
It is not known how long the body parts were in the water, but police estimate the time between two days and two weeks.
Police last showed a reconstructed head after various body parts were found in 2001.
The body parts were later found to belong to four-year-old Rowena Rikkers, whose mother and step-father were later jailed for her death.
