Old murder case reopened in Groningen

7 February 2007

AMSTERDAM – The husband of Gonda Smit, a woman from the Groningen town of Hoogezand who was killed in 1996, will be prosecuted for the murder, or manslaughter, of his wife after all.

The man was arrested twice in the past on suspicion of involvement in Gonda’s death. Both times the case was thrown out of court however because of lack of evidence.

The public prosecution department says new information has come to light. The justice department has therefore decided to reopen the case. The man must appear in court on 13 March. He is also suspected of arson.

29-year-old Gonda Smit died in a fire in her home in Hoogezand in 1996. Her husband managed to escape the burning house together with their children.

The circumstances of the fire immediately appeared suspect. Traces of petrol were found, for instance, and 350 thousand guilders had been taken from the safe.
