Mother designated as suspect 01/06/2007 00:00

1 June 2007

BAARLE-NASSAU  - The justice department has named the mother of the infant found dead in a car on Wednesday as a suspect of culpable homicide, a spokesperson for the public prosecution department in Breda announced today.

The woman will not be arrested however.

An autopsy shows that the 11-month-old boy most likely died of dehydration after being left behind in the car by his mother in Baarle-Nassau.

The 33-year-old teacher from Chaam had parked her car in front of the primary school where she worked on Wednesday. The child was discovered dead at 2.15 pm by colleagues of hers who tried in vain to resuscitate the boy. The baby had passed away before emergency services arrived on the scene.

The justice department explained on Friday that the circumstances do not pose enough reason to arrest the woman. She has already made a statement to the authorities and was named a suspect on Thursday evening.
