Horeca Nederland sues breweries 01/10/2007 00:00

1 October 2007

WOERDEN – The catering industry association Koninklijk Horeca Nederland is taking the three large breweries to court for artificially keeping beer prices high during the 1990s.

The industry association's claim comes in response to European Commissioner Neelie Kroes's urging that the industry recover damages incurred as a result of the price fixing agreements.

Chairman of Koninklijk Horeca Nederland Jeu Claes confirmed a report on the claim against Heineken, Grolsch and Bavaria in De Telegraaf.

Kroes says the brewers formed a cartel at the end of the 1990s. Brussels therefore fined the businesses EUR 273 million. They appealed the fine. Only Belgian InBev was spared the fine because it testified against the other three.
