3 July 2007

BRUSSELS – Figures from Eurostat, the EU's statistical service, show that the Netherlands once again has the lowest unemployment rate in the European Union.

The Netherlands and Denmark have both been at the bottom of the list for some time when it comes to the number of unemployed. The Netherlands had an unemployment rate of 3.2 percent in May, just edging below Denmark's 3.3 percent. Slovakia and Poland continue to have the highest unemployment figures.

Eurostat reports that 16.4 million men and women were without paying work in the EU as a whole in May. One year ago that was 18.6 million.

The unemployment rate of the EU as a whole is 7 percent. Unemployment fell in 22 member states and rose in four. Only Romania saw no change to its unemployment rate.
