Gas stink among the bulbs

A gas cloud caused a major stink in the bulb-growing area (de Bollenstreek in Dutch) and in the Amsterdam region on Tuesday. The Fire Brigade received dozens of calls about the horrendous smell at about 2.30pm. The gas cloud, given the wind direction, appears to have from the North Sea, and probably from a vessel off the coast at Katwijk. Members of the public were advised to keep their windows and doors closed but the police said the gas did not pose a health risk.

Man jumps from burning home

A man was injured in the Dutch town of Goes on Monday night when he jumped from the third floor of his burning home. Fire fighters used ladders to save two other people from the blaze.

Girl shot with air gun

A 13-year-old girl was slightly injured in Tilburg on Monday when she was shot in the back with an air gun. Police arrested two 12-year-old boys and a 13-year-old boy. The victim knew the suspects from school. They allegedly fired at road signs before turning on her.

Woman detained with illegal ape

A German woman was detained by officers of the agricultural inspectorate (AID) at a horse fair in the town of Elst because she was walking around with an 'illegal monkey'. A special exemption must be requested to have a Japanese Macaque monkey in the Netherlands. The woman had no ownership papers and was fined EUR 200. She is to provide the documentation, which she said she left in Germany, within a week. The monkey was allowed to return to Germany with her.
