Defective barrier causes jam on A6 06/09/2006 00:00

AMSTERDAM — A defective barrier on the A6 motorway between Almere-Stad and Muiderberg junction caused a 12-kilometre traffic jam on Wednesday.
Normally, a special carpool lane is opened up during peak hours but the barrier remained closed early in the morning due to a technical problem, a spokesperson for the automobile association ANWB said.
This led to a 9-kilometre tailback by 7.15am and it grew to 12 kilometres in the next 45 minutes. The barrier was back in operation shortly after 8am.
