Balkenende wants ‘play duty’ 01/11/2006 00:00
Mandatory play year must teach children to get along with one another
1 November 2006
THE HAGUE – Prime minister Jan Peter Balkenende wants to introduce the learning obligation to begin already at age three instead of four years. In that year children must play with each other, and in so doing learn how to decently get along with each other and to stand up for themselves.
“Perhaps we must then call it play duty”, said Balkenende in a speech on Wednesday.
“In playing without effort they gain all kinds of social skills which are essential in their later life, '' thus said the Prime Minister. On Wednesday he receives the report ‘Directions of the child, Compass for the new cabinet’ from Steven van Eijck, commissioner for youths and young people’s policy which gives direction to
‘Operatie Jong’. (Operation Youth).
