Arabs build LNG installation on North Sea 01/02/2007 00:00
1 February 2007
AMSTERDAM – Taqa – the national energy company of Abu Dhabi – announced today that it is going to build a large LNG installation off the coast near Rotterdam.
It is a unique project involving the investment of several hundred million euro. Taqa is going to bring in LNG from all over the world. The gas will be converted back into gas form on a ship specially equipped for this purpose.
The gas will then be pumped into empty underground gas fields.
Taqa took over BP's P15/P18 gas fields at the end of last year. The fields are located some 20 to 40 kilometres off the coast and are connected to the mainland by pipeline. The fields can store 16 to 20 billion cubic metres of gas, almost half of the annual consumption in the Netherlands.
Now that the gas reserves in the Netherlands are being depleted, the government is trying to encourage companies to import natural gas from abroad and store it in empty fields. This can ensure that the Netherlands continues to play a key role on the European gas market.
