Amsterdam pays damages over publicity screen 03/11/2006 00:00

Giant television screen on Rembrandtplein - an eyesore or a sight to behold?

3 November 2006

AMSTERDAM - The city district Amsterdam-Centrum has awarded damages of EUR 750.000 to be paid to the operator of the digital publicity screen on the Rembrandtplein.

Due to a procedural mistake, the Explore Vision Group (EVG) had to wait by almost four years before it could build the giant television screen, and threatened a lawsuit for compensation of EUR 7 million for missed publicity income.

That was evident Friday from a letter from the Socialist SP party of Amsterdam-Centrum.

The city district (stadsdeel) and EVG have litigated since 2002 concerning the screen of 115sq m.

Due to negligence of civil servants, a licence was granted for the screen's construction despite the fact it was against aesthetic demands.

The city-centre continued to argue that the screen could not be placed on the square.

EVG lodged an appeal against that stance and the Council of State ruled in its favour on 4 May 2005.
