26 March 2008

GDANSK – The Netherlands cannot manage without Polish workers at the moment. At the same time, Poles are faced with an improving labour market at home, where wages are rising. "People here [in Poland] are missing the labourers that have gone West."

Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende said this Tuesday during a working visit to Poland. The prime minister says the Netherlands too "simply needs" the workers from this country at the moment.

Balkenende said that ultimately more Dutch will have to enter the labour market. The Dutch that are now standing on the sidelines will be partially able to fill the gap left behind by Polish workers, should they decide to return to their homeland.

"The point is that the Netherlands must make the most of all talent."
