AMSTERDAM – The 21-year-old Romanian woman found dead after a fire in a hotel on the Damrak in Amsterdam had suffered a violent death before the fire broke out.

The police announced this on Friday.

The 25-year-old Frenchman who was injured in the fire has since been released from hospital and is being held by police. He was arrested on the night of the fire.

It is still unclear what took place in the hotel room. A spokesperson says the female victim and the man did not know each other.

The fire that broke out at about 6.15 pm in a room on the third floor of the Swissôtel was presumably deliberately set. The door to the room was barricaded so that hotel personnel could not get in.

The staff evacuated the hotel. Three workers were admitted to hospital because of smoke inhalation. The flames did not spread from the room and the fire brigade had the fire under control by 7 pm.
