THE HAGUE – The anti-Koran film that Geert Wilders is due to release soon has led to a number of threats to the politician online. The Telegraaf reports on Wednesday that one such threat comes from the website al-ekhlaas.net.
A spokesperson for the National Anti-terrorism Coordinator's office (NCTb) says that the department is aware of this particular threat..
Terrorism network Al Qaeda has issued the order to kill Geert Wilders because of the yet to be released film, according to a recent posting on a secure web forum.
The posting reads: "In the name of Allah, we ask you to bring us the throat of this infidel who insults Islam and Muslims and mocks the prophet Mohammed."
The message also calls on followers to terrorise the Netherlands in order to prevent the release of the film.
"We are monitoring everything very closely," the NCTb spokesperson stressed. "We are taking everything into account in assessing the risk to Mr Wilders."
The Freedom Party PVV leader wants the Koran to be banned in the Netherlands because he claims it is a fascist book that incites violence. In the past he has called on Muslims who wish to stay in the Netherlands to rip out and discard half the Koran.
The announcement of a film in which Wilders will illustrate all these ideas has already led to great concern on the part of the government. Police in a number of cities are also taking precautions in the event of violent reactions to the film. Wilders says he expects to release the film in March.
