Valencia sacks Dutch trainer 22/04/2008 00:00

The sack comes five days after the trainer led the club to winning the Spanish cup.

22 April 2008

SPAIN - Valencia football club has sacked its Dutch trainer Ronald Koeman. His assistant Tonny Bruins Slot has also been dismissed.

The reason for the sacking is the disappointing performance of the Spanish club in the country's Primera Division.

Six months ago, Koeman left Dutch team PSV Eindhoven for Valencia CF, which was in fourth place in the Spanish league at the time. Under Koeman, the club fell to 15th place, just two points away from relegation.

Last week, Valencia won the Spanish cup, leading the club's management to express their confidence in the Dutch trainer. But it soon evaporated following a 1-5 defeat versus Athletic Bilbao.

Former player Salvador González Marco, better known as Voro, will take over as the club's caretaker coach.
