The booming Dutch shipbuilding industry 08/04/2008 00:00

Turnover in 2006 saw an increase of 25 percent and is predicted to have similar increase for 2007

8 April 2008

THE NETHERLANDS - The Dutch shipbuilding industry is experiencing a boom. Turnover reached EUR 6 billion in 2006, an increase of nearly 25 percent. The branch organisation Netherlands' Shipbuilding expects the 2007 figures to be equally positive. The organisation represents 800 businesses employing 25,000 workers.

The impressive figures are due mainly to the growth of the world economy, and also to rising demand for luxury yachts from multi-millionaires. The Dutch shipbuilding industry specialises in such craft, as well as in dredgers and tugs.

The sector desperately needs more personnel; it has 2,500 vacancies for pipe fitters, welders, and a variety of technical staff.
