Conductor Valery Gergiev bade farewell to the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra after 13 years.

26 May 2008

The Russian conductor Valery Gergiev has said his farewells to the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. For his last concert, the orchestra played Ein Deutches Requiem by Johannes Brahms.

After the concert, Gergiev was awarded the Johan van Oldebarneveldt medal by City Mayor Ivo Opstelten. Every year, the award, named after a 16th century Rotterdam dignitary, is presented to someone who has served Rotterdam's economy, arts or sciences.

Gergiev has led the Philharmonic Orchestra for 13 years.
