Political reform of Netherlands Antilles delayed 02/04/2008 00:00

Not possible to complete the political reform of the Antilles this year, says interior minister.

2 April 2008

THE HAGUE - Interior minister Ank Bijleveld has announced that it will no longer be possible to complete the political reform of The Netherlands Antilles this year.
The previous target date was 15 September, but the reforms have been delayed by problems concerning law and order and financial control on some of the islands.

In the new political structure, the islands of Curaçao and St Maarten will have an autonomous status, like Aruba, while Bonaire, St Eustatius and Saba will become special municipalities of The Netherlands.

Antillean prime minister Emily Saïdy de Jongh-Elhage claims it will in fact be possible for some of the reform agreements to come into force on 15 December as planned.

The Netherlands and the Antilles are to review the situation in May.
