Opposition lashes out at Labour for cuts in day care centres 15/05/2008 00:00

Opposition accuses Labour of irresponsible governance for going back on their words on day care centres subsidies.

15 May 2008

The opposition in parliament has lashed out at the Labour Party for agreeing to substantial cuts to day care centres.

During the 2006 election campaign, Labour promised that these centres would be free of charge.

The Green Left party accuses Labour of irresponsible governance while the Democrats D66 said many citizens would view the cuts as a measure from an unreliable government.

Two weeks ago, the cabinet announced it would have to introduce drastic cuts to the government subsidies for day care centres. The centres are so popular that the allocated budget is inadequate.

The cabinet will decide on the extent of the cuts later this summer.
