No Queen's birthday receptions in Afghanistan or Pakistan 30/04/2008 00:00

Dutch embassies will not hold receptions for guests and fellow Dutch citizens in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

30 April 2008

Every year, on the Queen's birthday, Dutch embassies hold receptions for guests and fellow Dutch citizens. This year, however, there have been no such festivities at the Dutch embassies in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The safety measures are being taken in response to the release last month of Dutch politician Geert Wilder's anti-Qur'an film Fitna. Last week, the embassy in the Afghan capital of Kabul was closed for security reasons, while the embassy in the Pakistani capital of Islamabad has now been moved to a hotel. The Foreign Ministry is providing no further details about the Islamabad relocation.
