Mussel fishers protest ban 27/03/2008 00:00

Fishermen in Zierikzee are protesting the ban on fishing seed mussels from the Wadden Sea.

27 March 2008

ZIERIKZEE – Fishermen in Zierikzee are protesting the ban on fishing seed mussels from the Wadden Sea. The fishers had been granted a permit to do so from the Agriculture Ministry, but the Council of State argues this permit should never have been given.

The Council says it is not clear whether this practice causes damage to the environment. No seed mussels may therefore be fished this spring.

The mussel fishers say the ban is disastrous for the sector, since the mussel growers will not be able to spread the seed mussels in the Oosterschelde to harvest them later.

Parliament will debate the matter on Thursday.
