Health costs not tax deductible in 2009 29/04/2008 00:00

Costs for premium treatment will no longer be tax deductible, says government.

29 April 2008

The Dutch cabinet has decided that from January 2009, health costs will no longer be tax deductible.

At present, tax payers can deduct costs for expensive treatments that are not being covered by their health insurance companies, if they exceed a certain amount linked to the person's income.

A special benefit of between EUR 100 and EUR 450 will be granted to the chronically sick, but such amounts will, in most cases, fail to cover the costs.

It is estimated that the new measure will save the treasury several hundred million euros a year.
