Going green with fashion 15/05/2008 00:00

AMSTERDAM – Fashion come environmental enthusiasts are making a statement bolder and louder than ever with the opening of Green Bags exhibition on 25 May 2008.

Instead of focussing on the latest trend this summer, the designers are basing their designs, choice of materials and method of manufacture on ‘going green’.

Many of the bags exhibited at the Tassenmuseum Hendrikje (Museum of Bags and Purses) are made of recycled materials such as old cloth, car tyres, and bill boards.

Paula Pontes is one such bag designer who has resisted waste in fashion and the fashion industry through her use of recycled materials.

While the concept of recycling is age-old - with a history that goes back to poverty-stricken war times - some designers have also taken going green a step further by digging into the trash cans, searching for empty chip packet and sweet wrappers, and then finishing their designs off with crochet or weaving.

The exhibition, opened by Dutch politician Femke Halsema (Green Party), also showcases bags made from sustainable materials. Not only are these bags made of recycled natural materials, they are also made in an environment-responsible way.

The exhibition Green bags, brand-new and used materials is on show at Tassenmuseum Hendrikje until 17 August 2008.
