Education Minister ignores Council for Culture 16/05/2008 00:00

The minister is not going to increase the arts budget despite recommendation by the council.

16 May 2008

THE NETHERLANDS - Dutch Education Minister Ronald Plasterk says he is not prepared to increase the arts budget.

This is ignoring a recommendation by the Dutch Council for Culture that the government should spend several million euros extra on art.

In 2009, The Netherlands will introduce new subsidy rules for the cultural sector. Museums, theatre companies and orchestras will not only be judged on their artistic qualities, they will also have to put forward a solid business plan.

According to the Council for Culture, these changes will require an extra EUR 26 million on top of the EUR 245 million already reserved. The education minister commented that the Council should find a way to stay within the budget.
