PRAGUE – Police in the Czech Republic have launched a major search for a Dutch national who has reportedly abducted his daughter.

The 38-year-old man took her from his ex-wife's home in the Czech village of Zakava on Saturday morning. Nothing has been heard from him or 6-year-old Charlie Tereza since, police say.

The police have asked colleagues in Australia for assistance, since this is where the Dutchman is a resident, Australian media reported on Monday.

The man came to the Czech Republic in December seeking contact with his young daughter, who has lived with her mother since their divorce, Czech police report.

He was given permission to take the girl for a few hours, but failed to return her that evening. The Czech media report the man took his daughter in a red Ford Escort which he borrowed from his former brother-in-law.

The incident comes at a time that the Czech authorities are under great pressure to better protect the welfare of minors, after several scandals involving child abuse.
