Number of people in The Netherlands who pay no health insurance premiums rose by 26 percent in 2007

THE NETHERLANDS - Statistics Netherlands reports that the number of people in The Netherlands who pay no health insurance premiums rose by 26 percent in 2007. This brings the total number of defaulters to almost 250,000. However, as the health insurers themselves point out, many such defaulters also have large financial debts.
The report also points out that the total number of people in the country with no health insurance at all fell last year by 10,000 to 231,000. Almost half those uninsured are between 20 and 40 years old.
Health Minister Ab Klink wants to use fines and attachments of earnings to collect the overdue premiums. He says legislation is currently being drafted to make this possible.
