Dutch football premiership battle far from over 14/04/2008 00:00

The 1-1 draw between Eindhoven PSV and FC Twente spells hope for Amsterdam’s Ajax.

14 April 2008

The battle for the top position in the Dutch Premier League is far from over. The leaders Eindhoven PSV only managed a 1-1 draw at home against FC Twente. This means that Amsterdam's Ajax can still catch PSV on points.

Ajax was due to play away at Groningen but the match was cancelled after a fire broke out on the stands shortly before kick-off.

The authorities decided to cancel the game as the smoke could have posed a health threat to the players. Three supporters were taken to hospital and about twenty others were treated at the stadium. The Ajax-Groningen game will now be played on Wednesday.

PSV is six points ahead and has one more game to play. Ajax has a game in hand and theoretically can still catch the Eindhoven club. NAC Breda assured themselves of a place in the Champions League play-offs with a 1-0 victory over Almelo Heracles.

The situation at the bottom of the table remains fluid as well, although it is definite that Sparta Rotterdam has avoided relegation. Sparta thrashed Heerenveen 4-2 at home. Tilburg's Willem II picked up valuable points by beating Feyenoord Rotterdam 3-1, also at home.

The rest of Sunday's results:
Nijmegen NEC beat Vitesse Arnhem 1-0.
Kerkrade Roda JC beat Venlo 4-1.
Rotterdam Excelsior drew 1-1 against AZ Alkmaar.
Doetinchem drew 1-1 against FC Utrecht.
