Convicted pickpockets banned from public transport 24/01/2008 00:00

AMSTERDAM – The Amsterdam police are introducing a new weapon in the battle against notorious pickpockets. From February they will be able to ban thieves with prior offences from public transport for several months if they look to be in danger of offending again.
A spokesperson for the police confirmed this on Thursday after a report in the Telegraaf.
Pickpockets often strike on public transport. Special teams of undercover officers will therefore be travelling on trams and metros to keep an eye on known criminals.
Those with prior convictions can even be banned if they travel aimlessly about, stand particularly close to other passengers, or clearly follow tourists.
The measure only applies for individuals who have been convicted of pickpocketing or mugging over the past five years. The ban blocks them from travel on the tram and metro and lasts for one, three or six months. Thieves who violate the ban can be arrested and prosecuted.
