Call to cut bad language 10/04/2008 00:00
MP wants parliament speakers to regain powers to edit bad language.
10 April 2008
THE HAGUE - Conservative VVD MP Johan Remkes wants the Dutch parliamentary speaker to regain powers to edit bad language from the verbatim reports of proceedings in the lower house.
In an interview with the Protestant daily newspaper Trouw, he says some words he hears in the chamber make him hopping mad. He explains that MPs call each other all sorts of names and that this is not in keeping with the status of parliament.
The speaker's power to edit certain terms out of the records, which was only rarely used, was scrapped in 2001. One example of such editing was the exclusion of the term "war criminal" in an MP's reference to the then Indonesian president Sukarno.
