20 pc of babies born to unwed parents 01/05/2007 00:00

AMSTERDAM – One in five of the babies born in the Netherlands is born to parents who are not married. This emerged from preliminary figures for 2006 from Statistics Netherlands (CBS). This percentage was about 15 percent in 1995.

Of all the 185,124 babies born in 2006, 21 percent (68,845) were born to couples who are not married. This was a first child for almost 60 percent of these parents.

The number of babies born to unwed couples was considerably lower in 1995 (29,561 of the 190,513 born).
