10,000 Ajax fans expected for Cup celebration 08/05/2006 00:00

AMSTERDAM — Police expect at least 10,000 Ajax fans to attend the tribute in Leidseplein on Monday evening after the Amsterdam side won the Gatorade Cup.

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored two goals on Sunday to help Ajax to a 2-1 victory in the Dutch Cup over PSV.

Amsterdam Mayor Job Cohen will honour the team that beat PSV Eindhoven in the cup final. The players will line up on the steps of the Stadsschouwburg theatre.

Several hundred additional police officers were assigned to the area and units of riot police (ME) were put on standby to ensure the event remains orderly. A police spokesperson said there were no indications fans from rival clubs planned to disrupt the tribute. Saying it was expected to be a "big party", the spokesperson said that the police "were prepared for everything".

Ajax called on its supporters to "keep a grip" on their behaviour and to allow the tribute to pass off in a "dignified" manner.

A few weeks ago police officers intercepted to fans of Hague club ADO as they were allegedly preparing to burn down the Ajax fan clubhouse. This was said to be revenge for a savage attack by Ajax supporters on the ADO clubhouse earlier this year.
