Language learning will help you take full advantage when living in Luxembourg, whether it's for a few months, a few years or for a lifetime.

Moving to Luxembourg is like moving into a multi-lingual melting pot. The local language is Luxembourgish, but many official languages in works and school are either French, German, or both. It can feel overwhelming, but the best way to get connected with a culture is to learn some kind of relevant language. Whether you choose French, German or Luxembourgish will depend on where you live in Luxembourg, your work, which school your children are at and how long you plan to live in the country. Here is some basic help on figuring out which language to go for.

Learning French
As the French were the founders of Luxembourg French became the language used as an official and administrative choice. Even today French is widely used across the country and Luxembourg City. From small talk to television, French is a go to lingua franca for everyday communication.

Government Recognised Organisations
The government recognised organisations in Luxembourg for learning French are connected with the Ministry of Education. Classes can be either in the day or evening, and the costs average at around EUR 200 a course.

Learning German
German is one of the oldest languages, and stays an important language in Luxembourg as the other big brother bordering country. Most Luxembourgers speak German, and it was originally used as a sort of common language between French and Luxembourgish. German carries a prominence in art, music, philosophy, innovation, economics and science. If you decidde to work in Luxembourg industries like automotive engineering, biochemistry, finance, medicine or technology, then learning German could be very useful on multiple levels. Also, in Luxembourgish primary school, German is the initial language learned to read and write starting from age six.

Online language courses
You can learn almost anything from the internet for free with a bit of research, so don’t be afraid to look around. Radio Lingua Network offers free podcasts for conversational French and other languages in a very accessible format.

You may also want to buy pocket phrasebooks that will help you get around in the day-to-day grind. They won’t be great at in-depth grammar usage and explanations but they will have useful phrases. It is also useful to have an electronic translator to carry around just in case — Google Translate and Word Reference are quite useful free apps that often provide an audio and written translation.
