In 1880, Belgium celebrated 50 years of independence with a national exhibition. To house this exhibition and to make Brussels more attractive, King Leopold had the Palais du Cinquantenaire set up.
The palace, with its park and museum, is set on former parade grounds and was designed by architect Gédéon Bordiau. Over the years, the park and the buildings have been used for many national and international exhibitions.
