Paris | 14/05/2009 - 25/05/2009 Dvâravatî aux sources du bouddhisme en Thaïlande

Exhibition about Buddhist art from central Thailand between the 6th and 12th centuries, known as Dvâravatî art. Dvâravatî is a kingdom situated between Burma and Cambodia, and its existence was mentioned in Chinese history books around the 7th century. Inscriptions in Old Mon relating to the kingdom have led historians to attribute Dvâravatî art to the Mon populations, who seemingly lived in these regions before the arrival of the Thais. The kingdom was for a long time considered to be hypothetical, but it has become a significant part of Thailand’s ancient history thanks to the work of George Cœdès and the interpreting of silver coins dated from the 7th and 8th centuries, found on the Nakhon Pathom site.
