The former hostage fears she may be an easy target of the FARC rebels once back in Colombia.

WASHINGTON - Former hostage Ingrid Betancourt, the Franco-Colombian politician rescued after more than six years in the hands of Marxist rebels, said she does not plan to return to Colombia for now.

"I love my country. I'm Colombian from the bottom of my heart and I adore my country and I want to serve my country," Betancourt, who was set free in a bold Colombian army rescue operation June 2 with 14 other hostages, told NBC television.

But citing safety concerns, Betancourt said "I think I have to be prudent."

"The guerrilla could be wanting to take revenge. I would be an easy target," she said, adding: "I think that my family has been through a horrible ordeal and I don't think I have the right to just break all our dreams, when we are finally able to touch our hands and to feel each other."

"The only thing important for me right now is to help those who are still suffering in the jungle," she added.

Asked on Wednesday by CNN television if she planned to run for Colombia's presidency again, as she did as candidate of her Green party, Oxygen, when she was abducted in 2002, Betancourt said that was not her priority.
