03/07/2009EU backs scheme to attract foreign film-makers

The EU competition authorities gave the green light on to a scheme to entice foreign film-makers to shoot movies in France.

Brussels – The EU competition authorities gave the green light on Thursday to a French tax scheme to entice foreign film-makers to shoot movies in France.

"We have approved the tax credits for foreign cinematic works" covered by the French scheme, said Jonathan Todd spokesman for EU Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes.

"We've assessed it and we have come to the conclusion today that it is compatible with EU state aid rules," he added.

The new French scheme, championed by French Culture Minister Fredéric Mitterrand, is aimed at encouraging foreign film makers to come to France to make films with a link to French or European culture.

The aim is not only to boost the film and associated industries in France but to spread the country's image and culture around the world.

Several famous film directors and producers -- including Woody Allen -- have already showed their willingness to work in France.

The films, TV films and series in question will benefit from a 20 percent tax credit -- up to EUR four million -- on their expenses in France as long as there is some element linked to French or European culture.
