LONDON, Aug 21 (AFP) - A young Frenchwoman has been bludgeoned to death with a blunt instrument in a park on the outskirts of London and police do not rule out that she was the victim of an unknown serial killer, they said Saturday.

Amelie Delagrange, a 22-year-old Parisian student of English, was discovered by a passer-by late Thursday in a park in Twickenham, in the south-west of London. She died later in hospital.

Her handbag and portable telephone were missing.

The crime is similar to three attacks in the last 20 months, one of them fatal.

"There is nothing specific to link the incidents at this stage, but it is obviously an important line of inquiry," a London Metropolitan Police spokesman said Friday.

The earlier murder victim, Marsha McDonnell, 19, was killed in February of last year, while two other women, aged 17 and 34, were struck violently on the head in January 2003 and April this year respectively, sustaining serious injuries.

In March of this year, a teenage boy was arrested in connection with the McDonnell murder and has since been held at a psychiatric hospital.

Delagrange, whose first name was initially wrongly given as Amelia, hailed from a Paris suburb. Her parents were on their way to Britain Saturday.

Shortly before the incident she was reported to have taken a bus home after meeting a woman friend in a bar.

Police said it appeared she had got on the wrong bus and had thus been obliged to walk some distance to get to her address, crossing the park on the way.

Dozens of police were at the scene of the crime Saturday seeking witnesses and clues. The murder weapon remained undiscovered.

A man who escaped from an attacker shortly after the Marsha McDonnell murder told police his assailant's weapon had been a tool resembling a hammer.
