PARIS, April 19 (AFP) - A woman has admitted that she accidentally caused last week's Paris hotel fire that killed 23 people, nearly half of them children, French police said Tuesday.

The unnamed woman, who was taken into custody after a tip-off on Monday, is a relative of a nightwatchman at the Paris-Opera hotel, a source close to the investigation told AFP.

No details were being released on how she set off the inferno. Fire-fighters believe it started in a breakfast room on the first floor and spread to upper stories via the stair-well.

A total of 27 people remained in hospital Tuesday with burns or injuries caused by jumping from high windows.

The fire - the deadliest in Paris in 32 years - gutted the hotel, which lies behind the Galeries Lafayette department store.

Seventy-nine people, most of them African immigrants, were in the 32-room building though it was only licenced to accommodate 61.
