PARIS, July 3, 2007 (AFP) - The widow of the late French president Georges Pompidou died Tuesday at her Paris home, her foundation said. She was 94.

Claude Pompidou passed away at her home on the French capital's Ile Saint-Louis, the foundation said, without providing details on the circumstances of her death.

She had been active in leading the charity work of her foundation created in 1970 to help the sick, the elderly and handicapped children.

"This is very sad news," commented President Nicolas Sarkozy. "She was a very great lady. I had the pleasure of meeting her in the offices of the Pompidou foundation."

"She supported and loved her husband who was a very great president," said Sarkozy, while on a visit to Marseille.

Georges Pompidou, who suffered from poor health, died in April 1974 while in office, triggering much debate over whether presidents should disclose their medical records to the public. He served as president for five years.
