Western powers start talks on UN Syria resolution
French, American and British envoys on Tuesday held first talks on a possible UN Security Council resolution demanding that Syria put its chemical weapons under international control, diplomats said.
"Informal discussions are under way," said a diplomat confirming the talks on the French-proposed measure. The talks could last "several days," added another diplomat.
A proposal for Syria to put its chemical weapons under international control surfaced Monday and touched off a flurry of international diplomacy.
It came just as US President Barack Obama was preparing to hammer home his argument in favor of a military strike against Syria for allegedly using chemical weapons against civilians late late month.
Obama was in effect forced to put such a strike, which just weeks ago had seemed imminent until he requested Congressional approval, on hold. Obama gave a cautious welcome to the weapons supervision idea, calling it potentially promising.
