French warplanes have carried out air strikes on a Moamer Kadhafi army command centre south of Tripoli as rebels against his regime battle to advance westward, the French military said Monday.

The strikes on the command centre some 10 kilometres (about six miles) south of the capital's suburbs were carried out Sunday by Rafale jets, chief of staff spokesman Colonel Thierry Burkhard said Monday.

The damage is being evaluated and will likely remain confidential, he said.
