PARIS, Sept 4 (AFP) - French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin said Sunday that he hoped that the country's economic growth would exceed two percent in 2006.

Last week the government lowered its 2005 economic growth forecast to between 1.5 and two percent, and has yet to make a 2006 forecast.

"What I want is for growth to exceed two percent because I believe that is what France merits, what is really within its reach and capabilities," the prime minister said in a televised appearance.

Villepin said he hoped France would be able to achieve close to two percent growth this year.

"We want to get as close as possible to two percent and I think all of our efforts could help us reach that," de Villepin said.
