PARIS – French authorities say they received a video Wednesday showing
a French aid worker kidnapped in the Afghan capital Kabul earlier this
The video shows Dany Egreteau talking under duress with guns pointed
at him, saying he is unable to move and is forced to wear a blindfold
most of the time, French authorities said.
The French team in charge of his case were unable to establish
Wednesday when the video had been filmed.
The 32-year-old French aid worker was seized by gunmen as he walked
through a residential district of Kabul on 3 November. An Afghan
driver who tried to stop the abduction was shot dead.
The Frenchman, who worked for an NGO specialising in education
programmes, was on his first mission in Afghanistan and had been in
the country for a week.
There are hundreds of international aid organisations in Afghanistan
trying to help the country recover from three decades of war.
There has been a series of kidnappings in the capital, mostly by
criminal gangs seeking thousands of dollars in ransom, and three
expatriates were shot dead in attacks in October.
Afghanistan has seen record levels of violence this year as the
hardline Islamist Taliban step up their campaign to overthrow the
Western-backed Afghan government.
