The unemployment rate decreased by 1.1 percentage points on an annual basis, the ministry said.

The labour report comes at a critical time ahead of two-round legislative elections on June 10 and 17, with the solution to France's stubbornly high unemployment rate a key policy focus for candidates.

The ministry said the number of people out of work had dropped by 1.2 percent and 25,300 people to 2.01 million, according to France's particular way of calculating the unemployment rate, which is not in line with ILO standards.

An apparent sharp fall in joblessness in France in the last 12 months has been contested by trade unions and the opposition, casting doubt on the independence of statistics institute INSEE and the reliability of its non-ILO-standard statistics.

An annual review date of statistics agency INSEE was to take place in March -- before the presidential and legislative elections -- but was pushed back to later in the year for technical reasons, raising fears of manipulation.
