US officer nabbed with coke in Colombia
A US Army non-commissioned officer was arrested in Colombia as he prepared to travel to Paris carrying a large stash of cocaine, officials said Wednesday.
Burton Lemar Deion, 26, "was found with two backpacks filled with 1,999 grams (4.4 pounds) of cocaine," a narcotics police source told AFP.
The officer allegedly traveled to Bogota from Italy, where he is stationed, and spent three days in the Colombian capital before trying to return on October 12, when narcotics police arrested him at El Dorado International Airport.
He was being held by the US military at Bogota's La Modelo prison, the source said without providing further details.
The US embassy in Colombia confirmed the arrest and said Deion received a consular visit on October 13.
