GRENOBLE, France, April 13 (AFP) - Paul Georgevich Goldman, a US national who was wanted for murder in the state of Pennsylvania, hanged himself in a French prison cell where he was being held pending extradition, French gendarmes said on Tuesday.

Goldman, who is alleged to have murdered his mistress in the United States, was found hanged in his cell in the town of Varces in the southern Alps, gendarmes said, confirming a report in the regional Dauphine Libere newspaper.

The suicide came two days after a court in nearby Grenoble granted a US request for Goldman to be extradited to face trial.

Goldman, who is 39, is a naturalized US citizen born in the central Asian state of Uzbekistan.

The authorities in Pennsylvania accuse him of murdering Faina Fay Zonis, 42. He was arrested in Grenoble on January 20 this year.

French gendarmes said he hanged himself with a sheet in his cell while his cellmate was out taking exercise.
