MARSEILLE, April 26 (AFP) - US filmmaker Arthur Penn, known for such classics as "Little Big Man" and "The Chase", was robbed in his car during a holiday visit to the southern French city of Marseille, police said.

As the 81-year-old director's car was stopped at a red light on Sunday, two robbers wrenched open the passenger door, grabbed his wife's handbag and fled, they said.

Penn, whose films "Bonnie and Clyde" and "The Miracle Worker" won Oscars, directed his last work in 1989. He is the brother of photographer Irving Penn.
